Microsoft 365

Microsoft Sharepoint and OneDrive for Business were briefly discontinued today after a German TLS certificate was mistakenly added to the main .com domains for Microsoft 365 services.

At approximately 3:08 p.m. ET today, a Microsoft 365 advisory “SP659992” warned that users may not be able to access SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business.

“Users may have seen a certificate error when trying to access SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Users may also have been unable to access or present files in Microsoft Teams,” reads bulletin SP659992.

Microsoft resolved the issue ten minutes later, stating that the issue was caused by a recent certificate update that was causing users to experience errors when trying to access the service.

However, there is more to the story, as the outage was caused by mistakenly adding a *.sharepoint.de TLS certificate for Germany to the sharepoint.com main domain.

This error caused a TLS common name mismatch error for visitors from the United States and other countries on sharepoint.com and for all APIs or core services connecting to domains as well.

Other Sharepoint users have reported on Reddit [1, 2, 3] and Twitter [1, 2, 3] the same TLS errors, which prevented them from accessing the service.

Although it was only a short-lived hiatus, it had a huge impact while it lasted.
