Microsoft is testing a new, modern-looking Windows 11 volume mixer accessible through the Quick Settings panel on the taskbar that lets you adjust volume per app and switch between audio devices.

This new feature was announced earlier this week and is now rolling out to Insiders in the Dev Channel running Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25309.

Testers should open the Quick Settings panel to access it after clicking the volume icon in the Windows tray or use the new global hotkey (WIN+CTRL+V) for even faster control.

“The updated Audio Quick Settings experience brings a modern volume mixer that enables quick customization of audio on a per-app basis, with additional control to swap devices on the fly,” the Window team Insider said.

“With this change, you can now better customize your audio experience with more control and fewer clicks to better manage your favorite apps.”

While Redmond just announced it, the feature has been available since at least January (as discovered Windows Insider PhantomOcean), and it could be activated using the ViVe tool developed by Windows enthusiast Albacore.

If it’s not obvious yet, Microsoft’s implementation is very similar to the very popular EarTrumpet volume control utility for Windows, but still lacks an audio visualizer.

This development version of Windows 11 also adds a quick access list for additional spatial sound options available such as Dolby and DTS.

The voice access feature has also been revamped, with a redesigned built-in command help page that includes detailed descriptions and examples for each command.

“You can access the commands help page from Help > Show all commands in the voice access bar or use the voice command ‘what can I say?’, Microsoft said. You can also find more Voice Access command details at this Microsoft support page.

Voice Access now also supports more English dialects, including English-British, English-Indian, English-New Zealand, English-Canadian, and English-Australian.

You will be prompted to upload a voice template the first time voice access is enabled for recognition on the device.

You can use US English voice access if a voice model that matches your display language is not available.

Microsoft also announced this week the release of Windows 11 22H2 ‘Moment 2’ Updatewhich comes with a long list of new features.

Some highlights are an overview of Phone Link for iPhone available for Windows 11 Insiders and now integrating the new AI-powered Bing Chat integrated into the search field of Windows 11.

Redmond is also working on adding a new option to the taskbar context menu allowing users to quickly kill unresponsive processes without opening task manager.
