Microsoft Edge’s built-in VPN feature may start rolling out to all Stable Channel users soon, with some users already get access to functionality.

Edge’s “Edge Secure Network” VPN uses Cloudflare and aims to protect your device and sensitive data while you browse, but remember that it is not a proper replacement for your VPN.

Unlike traditional VPN extensions or tools, Edge uses Cloudflare routing to encrypt your internet connection and protect your data from online threats like hackers.

The feature has been in development for almost a year now, and it’s finally rolling out to select users in Edge stable.

So how does Edge VPN work in the background? According to our tests, Microsoft’s secure network sends your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to create a secure connection. This means that all URLs, including those still served over an unsecured HTTP connection, can be accessed to make it harder for attackers to obtain your browsing data.

As mentioned, Edge’s secure network does not replace your VPN needs. For example, you can’t choose your preferred location, and it’s not meant for streaming, so you can’t access Netflix if particular content is blocked.

However, you can use Edge Secure Network to access an ISP blocked Torrent site.

Still, Edge’s Secure Network is free and useful and should start rolling out to all users soon.
