Microsoft says Windows 10 updates released in late September are causing Windows taskbar flickering issues and app instability.

“After installing updates released on September 20, 2022 or later, taskbar items may flicker and cause system instability,” Microsoft said in a new issue added to the Windows Health Dashboard. Friday.

Redmond added that restarting affected devices may alleviate instability issues in some cases, but perhaps only on certain affected systems.

The full list of affected Windows versions includes Windows 10 22H2, Windows 10 21H2, Windows 10 21H1, and Windows 10 20H2.

Symptoms caused by this known issue may cause:

• Weather or News & Interests widget or icons flicker on Windows taskbar
• Windows taskbar to become unresponsive
• Windows Explorer becomes unresponsive
• Applications, including Microsoft Word or Excel, to stop responding if open when the issue occurs

Microsoft fixed the issue via Known Issues Rollback (KIR)a Windows feature that rolls back non-security Windows patches sent through Windows Update.

After deployment, patches issued by KIR typically reach all unmanaged consumer and business devices within 24 hours, with affected users having the option to speed up the process by restarting their computers.

Group policies for the enterprise

IT administrators should install and configure a KIR Group Policy to address these system instability issues on affected company-managed devices.

Group Policy is located in Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows 10 20H2, 21H1, 21H2, and 22H2 KB5017380 221207_23451 Feature Preview.

To deploy Known Issues Restore, you must access Local Computer Policy or Domain Policy on your domain controller using the Group Policy Editor to choose the version of Windows you want to target.
